Topics of Interest:

In addition to a generally keen interest in all things LGBT and diversity-related, Ed has particular experience and interest in discussing certain issues in panels, workshops, articles, etc.

  • Trans and nonbinary issues

Having published over half a dozen MM/gay romance novels with trans and nonbinary main characters, with a particular focus on trans men as romance heroes, Ed is always interested in discussing the T! From gender identity terms (nonbinary or genderqueer?) to grammar (“transgender” and not “transgendered”), to more nuanced discussions of trans stereotypes and diverse experience, or discussing the growing trans romance niche, there are so many important conversations to be held! This includes personal experience with trans life and transition. One highlight was co-presenting a speech on trans rights and personal experiences for the GMDC 2019 Charity Gala at the Troxy in London, UK, which can be viewed here.

  • Diversity and ownvoices in fiction

Ownvoices has been a hot topic in publishing and the wider world over the last few years. Ed has experienced the great, the bad, and the ugly sides of being a marginalized person within the indie romance publishing world. How can we ensure that ownvoices is used to uplift and not further marginalize queer and trans people? What can diversity within publishing do for queer and trans readers? Why does indie publishing offer so many opportunities for people who are economically and socially disadvantaged, and how can we encourage this proliferation of new voices and stories?

  • Reading the market, romance tropes, and self-publishing

For audiences of authors, Ed has developed a presentation on reading the market using tropes. This is best geared toward those who already self-publish romance, but can be adjusted. Tropes are the building blocks of human storytelling, and the shiny wrapping paper around our books. Mastering tropes can better satisfy reader expectations, spark your creativity, and boost your results as a career author. Ed can also speak about self-publishing more generally and introduce authors to self-publishing in MM romance.
